Malden Board of Appeal Tables Sign Petition, Approves Home Addition Variance

MALDEN — November 9, 2020 — Malden Board of Appeal tables a Broadway furniture store sign variance over conflicting size documents, approves a home addition for a cancer survivor. The board voted 5-0 at its November 9 virtual meeting to continue petition 20-009 from Sweet Home Furniture, 54 Broadway, after members discovered that the petition claimed landlord approval for a 90-square-foot sign while Ultra Signs drawings depicted a sign 600 inches wide by 36 inches high — roughly 150 square feet. Acting Chair Nate Kramer moved to table the case for two weeks, requiring owner Christopherson Machado to supply a written statement from property owner WS Development specifying exact dimensions before the board will rule. In the same session the board unanimously approved petition 20-010, allowing Michelle Connolly to extend her single-family home along a preexisting nonconforming side setback; Connolly cited neuropathy from chemotherapy as the medical motivation for moving her bedroom and bathroom to the ground floor.
