Other Committee · Meeting of February 18, 2026
Malden's Board of Appeal approved a sign variance for a remodeled Stop & Shop and tabled a separate development variance for 30 days. The board voted 4-1 to let Stop & Shop at 99 Charles Street install a larger main logo sign and signs on both side elevations, exceeding the city's standard two-sign, 40-square-foot limit per tenant. Gunnar McCormick of Magnolia Sign Company, representing Stop & Shop, said the remodel removes eight existing signs, including branding for "fresh-picked produce and natural foods" that "is not part of their new branding." Member Sherwin cast the lone dissenting vote.
Separately, the board voted 5-0 to continue a density, open-space and parking variance request from Alpha Business Center LLC for 1 Salem Street to its March 18 meeting, pending plan amendments tied to a peer-reviewed traffic study.
