MALDEN — The Malden School Committee voted 9-0 to extend its contract with transportation provider NRT by one year. Member Jennifer Spadafora, who negotiated the terms, said there is little competition among vendors, noting "there really is not many options out there." Member Keith Bernard urged staff to "hold their feet to the fire" over caregiver complaints about the vendor. Director of Finance and Operations Tony Mertz told the board Chapter 70 state aid will rise just $501,000 for fiscal 2027, and Malden must also make up a $1.6 million shortfall from falling below required net school spending in fiscal 2025.
The committee separately voted on subcommittee reorganization, dissolving the inactive Equity and Opportunity panel over Dawn Macklin's objection, with member Peter Piazza recorded voting no even as the chair declared the motion unanimous.
