School Committee · Meeting of January 28, 2026

Malden School Committee appointed Everett teacher Sean Salazar to the Northeast Metro Tech regional school board. The committee's first motion, to name former Malden School Committee member Leonard Iovino to the seat, failed 6-3, after which members voted to make Salazar's appointment unanimous. The vacancy opened after the death of longtime Malden representative James Holland, elected in 2024; Salazar will serve about two years of the unexpired term, through the 2028 election.

Member Rob McCarthy recused himself because he works for Metro Tech. Member Keith Bernard said Salazar gave "very intelligent, thoughtful answers" on AI policy, while Chair Gary Christenson backed Iovino, saying "we're filling a vacancy, remember that." Salazar told the board he intends to run for the seat's full term in 2028.
