Malden's School Committee approved a revised bullying prevention plan and ordered an internal student residency audit.
School Committee · Meeting of August 31, 2026
Malden's School Committee approved a revised bullying prevention plan and ordered an internal student residency audit. Member Jennifer Spadafora said the district has repeatedly found students enrolled after moving out of town, calling it a cost "taxpayers in Malden are absorbing." Member Peter Piazza asked that the audit avoid "heavy-handed tactics" like those used elsewhere. The committee also accepted a $100,000 gift from the Melvin Klayman Trust, split between district curriculum and a new scholarship fund, and adopted the updated Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan after suspending docket rules.
Parents from groups including Schools Beyond Screens Malden and Reconnect Malden pressed the board on classroom screen time and AI use, while another parent, Lynn Walters-Recke, said communication about the Little Dragons after-school program had been "deafening" in its silence. All votes passed unanimously.
