School Committee · Meeting of March 2, 2026

Malden's School Committee tabled a resolution backing a Proposition 2.5 override and voted to close pre-K-8 schools for the March 31 special election. Members voted 5-3 to table the override resolution sponsored by Peter Piazza and Keith Bernard after Vice Chair Jennifer Spadafora said the text reached only the clerk before the meeting. Chair Gary Christenson, also Malden's mayor, pledged a special meeting before the vote.

In a second 5-3 vote, the board adopted Superintendent Sippel's recommendation to close six pre-K-8 buildings March 31 because they double as polling places, pushing the last day of school to June 23. During public comment, parent Molly Maxwell said administrators conducted "a legal removal of special education... services without signed consent," as an external compliance review by consultant EmpowerEd continues, with findings due April 1.
