Construction starts on 20 affordable units at 213 Main St
Asian Community Development Corporation has begun preliminary sitework on a 20-unit income-restricted housing development at 213 Main Street in Malden, with completion expected in spring 2028.
The City of Malden announced Oct. 20 that Asian Community Development Corporation (ACDC) has begun preliminary sitework at 213 Main Street, where it is building a 20-unit income restricted housing development. Construction is expected to take 18 months, with completion scheduled for spring 2028.
The site previously housed the Salvation Army. ACDC purchased the property in 2022 using ARPA funds provided by the city.
The three-story building will include five one-bedroom units, 13 two-bedroom units and two three-bedroom units, for a total of 37 bedrooms. The design, led by ICON Architecture, will be all-electric and meet Enterprise Green Community and Energy Star Multi-Family New-Construction standards. The building will also be solar-ready, with all-electric efficient HVAC systems and a reinforced building envelope.
Malden Mayor Gary Christenson said in a statement, "The City of Malden deeply values ACDC's longstanding partnership and commitment to serving our residents," adding that the organization's work "has had a meaningful and lasting impact on our community."
Ward 1 City Councilor Peg Crowe said in a statement, "I am very excited to see this project finally moving forward," noting the project will bring "much-needed homes to Ward 1."
ACDC has worked in Malden since 2016 and has 40 years of experience creating and preserving affordable housing in Greater Boston. The organization also runs a youth leadership program in the city and offers HUD-approved homebuying education in Chinese and English, which it says is the only such program in Massachusetts.
ACDC Executive Director Angie Liou said in a statement that 213 Main Street will be the organization's first affordable building in Malden and "represents our commitment to invest in Maldonians and the shared vision of an affordable and vibrant city."
