Malden Planning Board Approves Tattoo Studio and Downtown Pet Boarding Permits

MALDEN — August 14, 2024 — Malden Planning Board unanimously approves tattoo studio and overnight pet boarding permits on August 14. The board voted 9-0 on both applications: one for Bruce Tangin and Ken Chen of Chrome Tattoo Studio at 888 Eastern Avenue, approved with four conditions including a restriction to tattooing only in a 943-square-foot Industrial 1 unit; and one for Katherine Kushank's Downtown Paw at 72 Pleasant Street, approved with five conditions allowing overnight boarding for up to 45 dogs and cats in the Central Business District. Ward 6 City Councilor Steven Winslow wrote in support of the tattoo studio, calling the use a fit "with other beauty and health businesses" at 888 Eastern. The Downtown Paw application drew letters from four neighboring Pleasant Street businesses and a 114-signature customer petition. The board also voted 9-0 to grant three waivers and tentative approval of a preliminary subdivision plan for the final 14.36-acre undeveloped parcel at the former Rose Quarry Overlook Ridge site, with conditions including installation of Flock surveillance cameras requested by Police Chief Glenn Cronin, who cited 1,461 calls for service at the development in the past 12 months.
