Salt shed, boathouse project redesigned, cost rises $31,000

Malden River Works salt shed and boathouse project redesigned after structural engineering error.

Municipal Building Committee - Malden River Works · Meeting of September 3, 2026

Malden River Works salt shed and boathouse project redesigned after structural engineering error. The Municipal Building Committee's virtual meeting on September 3 heard from designLAB architects that structural engineers had miscalculated pile-load capacity and initially recommended doubling the number of piles needed. The design team switched to timber piles instead, reducing total pile requirements to 65 for the boathouse and 66 for the salt shed, resulting in a $31,000 cost increase rather than a feared $500,000-plus impact.

Committee members unanimously approved a $38,430 invoice for construction documents, with final drawings expected by September 18. Ron Hogan reported the mayor intends to recommend to City Council the repurposing of Roosevelt Park bond funds for this project.
