Rules Committee Recommends Five-License Minimum for Marijuana Retail
Malden's Rules & Ordinance Committee unanimously recommended ordinance 197-26 to establish a minimum of five marijuana retail licenses.
City Council · Meeting of May 5, 2026
Malden's Rules & Ordinance Committee unanimously recommended ordinance 197-26 to establish a minimum of five marijuana retail licenses. Councillor Karen Colón Hayes, the sponsor, explained the measure would clarify confusion that arose when liquor license counts fluctuated without corresponding guidance on marijuana licenses. The committee found that conflicting ordinance sections created inconsistent license numbers, and agreed a fixed minimum of five licenses would prevent future conflicts.
The ordinance now moves to the full City Council.
