Malden Reports Significant Decline in Overdoses and Overdose Deaths

The City of Malden announced Thursday that sustained prevention and outreach work has produced a significant decline in both overdoses and overdose fatalities in the city, a trend officials attributed to continued vigilance from public health, public safety and community partners.

In a News Flash posted Thursday afternoon, the city said the drop bucks a broader trend of grim headlines on the opioid crisis, crediting ongoing coordination among city departments and community organizations for the improvement. The city did not release specific figures in the announcement.

Mayor Gary Christenson also spent part of the week marking two community milestones. He recognized longtime Malden resident Kathleen McKenna on her 80th birthday, and he joined a ceremony hosted by the city's Disability Commission to celebrate Disability Pride Month, according to separate City Hall announcements posted Thursday.
