MALDEN — The Finance Committee reviewed the Mayor's proposed fiscal year 2027 budget, which includes staffing cuts across city departments. Health and Human Services Director Laura Vlasuk outlined eliminations including a Senior Center position, full-time Teen Center staff, and a Veterans Affairs clerk, along with a new Veterans Officer hire. The City Clerk's Office lost its language access position but offset impacts by hiring bilingual poll workers and digitizing census forms using QR codes.
City Solicitor Alicia McNeil said the Legal Department reduced hours for two part-time solicitors while continuing to rely on outside counsel for ongoing litigation. Mayor Christenson indicated Police and Fire would be restoration priorities if additional funds became available. The Finance Committee will continue reviewing budgets from additional departments in coming weeks.
