City Council · Meeting of March 24, 2026
MALDEN — Finance Committee approved a $175,000 Department of Public Works retroactive salary appropriation. The committee voted unanimously on an ordinance updating the DPW salary schedule effective July 1, 2024, and voted 5-0 to recommend transferring $175,000 from the Salary Reserve account to cover retroactive pay and benefits. The DPW bargaining unit had been without a new contract for nearly two years since July 1, 2024, until an agreement was signed March 3, 2026.
Controller Chuck Ranaghan explained that approximately 95 percent of the transfer covered retroactive salary, with the remainder funding benefits including enhanced water system license stipends that enabled the city to develop internal expertise and avoid expensive contract workers.
